Semi-automated offside technology approved by clubs
Briefly

Premier League clubs have unanimously approved the use of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) starting from the 2024-25 season, with the system set to be introduced post an international break in September or October.
SAOT is anticipated to reduce the time taken for video assistant referee (VAR) checks for offside decisions by as much as 31 seconds, providing quicker and more consistent placement of the virtual offside line based on optical player tracking.
The aim of implementing SAOT is to enhance the consistency and efficiency of offside decisions, with improved broadcast graphics to elevate the in-stadium and viewing experience for fans, ultimately aiming to reduce controversies surrounding VAR for offside calls.
