"The problem you've got now is that the players now don't trust the system," Clattenburg told BBC Radio 5 Live.
"[Referees] need the authority to do the job in a safe environment. If not, many referees are going to leave the game and without referees unfortunately we are not going to get a game of football in," said Clattenburg.
