Newcastle will raise formal concerns with UEFA, Marseille and French police over treatment of their supporters after the Champions League defeat at the Stade Velodrome. Officers reportedly used pepper spray, batons and shields, with numerous supporters indiscriminately assaulted. Travelling fans were held inside the stadium for up to an hour and were to be escorted in 500-person groups to the metro and mandatory meeting point. After the first group left, police allegedly used force to stop remaining fans, causing visible distress and crushing in the upper concourse. Club staff tried to intervene but reported limited impact on police tactics.
