Newcastle United contacted the police after midfielder Joe Willock received racist abuse and threats via an anonymous Instagram account following a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace. The messages included racial slurs and threats of violence directed at Willock and his family. Willock posted a screengrab of the private messages and responded by praying for the sender. Newcastle said removing content and filtering messages was insufficient and called on social media companies to do more to protect users and assist prosecutions. The club reported the incident to police and vowed to support any investigation to identify and hold the perpetrator accountable.
