"I've had to make the difficult decision to withdraw to address something my body needs attention for after my last match,"
"I was so excited to keep going and this run meant the most to me, so having to stop here breaks my heart but I can't risk doing any further damage."
"Thanks for all the love and support. I'm so grateful everyone embraced me so much."
Naomi Osaka, a former world No. 1 and two-time Melbourne Park champion, withdrew injured from her Australian Open third-round match hours before it was scheduled to begin. She sustained the injury during her heated second-round win over Romania's Sorana Cirstea, briefly heading to the locker room and taking a medical timeout when leading 2-1 in the deciding set. Osaka did not detail the extent of the injury but said she withdrew to address something her body needs attention for and could not risk further damage. She thanked supporters on social media. She had been scheduled to face Australian qualifier Maddison Inglis on Rod Laver Arena.
