The Football Association has announced a ban on trans women playing in women's football starting June 1, 2023, following a recent UK Supreme Court ruling. The ruling clarified that under the 2010 Equality Act, the term 'sex' pertains to biological women, leading to a reevaluation of trans inclusion policies in sports. While organizations are adapting to these changes, individuals like Dr. Victoria McCloud are preparing to challenge the court's decision. The FA's spokesperson expressed empathy for affected trans women and highlighted the logistical impact of the new policy on about 20 registered amateur players.
We understand this will be difficult for people who simply want to play the game they love in the gender by which they identify, and we are contacting the registered transgender women currently playing to explain the changes.
The Supreme Court's ruling on 16 April means that we will be changing our policy. Transgender women will no longer be able to play in women's football in England... from 1 June.
