"once-in-a-lifetime moment to showcase and celebrate LGBTQIA+ communities in Washington."
"categorically rejecting any activities related to supporting homosexuality during the match."
"With matches on Juneteenth and pride, we get to show the world that in Seattle, everyone is welcome,"
"What an incredible honor!"
Seattle PrideFest designated the June 26 World Cup match as a Pride celebration featuring community events and an art contest. FIFA assigned the Egypt-Iran match to Seattle rather than Vancouver, while Belgium and New Zealand will play in Vancouver simultaneously. Egypt’s football federation sent a letter to FIFA rejecting any activities that support homosexuality during the match. Iran’s federation president criticized the scheduling and said Iran will raise the issue at a FIFA Council meeting in Qatar. FIFA controls stadiums and official fan zones but declined to comment on the complaints or possible venue changes. Seattle leaders expressed welcome and pride support.
