"It was nice to see Alphonso Davies back on the pitch again after such a long, severe injury. I didn't want him to have the pressure of getting us back into the game today, but with the way the match turned out it worked, and I felt that he could help us. We're obviously glad he's back."
"We're all very pleased for Alphonso Davies. It's been a long road for him. We've seen over the years how important Phonzy is for us, so we're extremely pleased that he's back -- and hopefully back at full steam soon."
Alphonso Davies made his return for Bayern Munich after nearly nine months out with a serious right-knee injury, entering in the 88th minute of a 3-1 Champions League win over Sporting CP. Joshua Kimmich's own goal gave Sporting an early lead before Serge Gnabry equalized. Seventeen-year-old Lennart Karl became the youngest player to score in three consecutive Champions League matches, and Jonathan Tah completed the victory for the Bundesliga leaders. The injury occurred in March during Canada's CONCACAF Nations League third-place game against the United States, involving a torn ligament and other knee damage. Bayern raised concerns about inadequate medical checks before Davies' flight back to Germany. Teammates expressed relief and optimism for his full recovery.
