Cristiano Ronaldo was shown a red card in the 61st minute after referee Glenn Nyberg reviewed a challenge via the pitchside monitor following a VAR check. The dismissal followed an elbow on Republic of Ireland defender Dara O'Shea, and Ronaldo reacted petulantly while the check took place before exchanging words with Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson. Ireland led 2-0 through Troy Parrott goals in the 17th and 45th minutes. Portugal remained in contention in the qualification group but faced a more difficult path after playing the final half hour with ten men. Caoimhin Kelleher previously saved a Ronaldo penalty in an earlier meeting.
