Jackson Hole Ski Patrol Files Petition to Unionize - SnowBrains
"Ski patrol is a skilled labor position with significant inherent risk. The skills and institutional knowledge acquired through years on the job is critical and irreplaceable for maintaining the highest safety and operational standards. At the end of the 2024-25 season, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) was the recipient of the National Ski Areas Association's "Best Overall Safety Program". As safety professionals, the patrol was integral in earning this award while putting their own safety at risk every day."
"Unionizing will help patrollers secure the stability, representation, and long-term foundation necessary to provide the world-class experience Jackson Hole is known for. "We are career first-responders doing one of the most dangerous jobs in North America, yet many of us struggle to afford to live in the community we serve," said Tyler Babcock, a nine-year patroller. In addition to being one of the wealthiest counties in the country, Teton County also maintains the largest income inequality gap. "This is about professionalism and sustainability."
Ninety-three percent of eligible Jackson Hole Ski Patrol members filed for a union representation election with the National Labor Relations Board. If certified, the patrol will organize as the Jackson Hole Ski Patrol Union under Communications Workers of America Local 7781, United Mountain Workers. Ski patrollers perform high-risk, skilled work and were integral to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort receiving the National Ski Areas Association's "Best Overall Safety Program" at the end of the 2024-25 season. Patrollers seek reasonable and equitable compensation, stability, representation, and management accountability to sustain safety, operational standards, and the resort's world-class guest experience. Many patrollers struggle to afford living in Teton County despite high local wealth and pronounced income inequality, prompting calls for professional sustainability and a seat at the table through union representation.
