Calif. hiker rescued after 'death gripping' side of cliff along the PCT
Briefly

A recent search and rescue operation in Southern California saw a hiker stranded on a steep cliff along the Pacific Crest Trail. Utilizing an emergency communication device, she called for help after being trapped in a precarious position for over an hour. The rescue team used a careful strategy, with a specialist bear hugging her due to her inability to move her arms. Once rescued, they were hoisted by helicopter, and both displayed intense relief after their ordeal, highlighting the ongoing need for repair on damaged trail sections.
Due to her very precarious spot, which she was exhausted from that position for over an hour, and with a heavy pack with unsure footing, the rescue specialist determined the safest option was to bear hug her and climb to the top.
He just could not risk asking her to lift her arms, that she was clearly death gripping the cliff with, in order to place a rescue strap on.
Portions of the famous trail are severely damaged and in need of repair, particularly in the area where the hiker became stuck.
