A group of five Ukrainian veteran amputees is in Corvallis, Oregon, for a two-week adaptive skiing program designed to aid their recovery and mental health. Hosted by the Corvallis Sister Cities Association, these veterans, along with two Ukrainian ski coaches, are learning to use specialized adaptive ski equipment. The training aims not only to enhance the veterans' confidence but also to equip the coaches with the skills necessary to teach adaptive skiing to fellow amputees back in Ukraine, thereby fostering a community of shared support and empowerment.
"The purpose of this program is not just to teach skiing, but to instill hope and encourage these veterans to participate in life after injury," said Carol Paulson, co-founder of the Corvallis Sister Cities Association.
"By training local coaches and veterans together, we ensure this knowledge is shared and perpetuated back in Ukraine, giving them the skills to help others in their communities," said one of the Ukrainian ski instructors.
