The San Jose City Council voted against a proposed 17-story apartment complex in West San Jose, siding with local homeowners' concerns about neighborhood disruption. Despite the developer's offer to reduce the project to 11 stories, city officials highlighted the proposal's inconsistency with the general plan and its size compared to the Cory neighborhood. Community protests, including significant participation from residents, underscored local opposition. While some housing advocates support the idea of new development to meet housing needs, the City Council prioritized existing neighborhood integrity in their decision-making process.
We need housing of all types and for all income levels. However, at its core, the proposed project was inconsistent with San Jose's general plan and was outsized for the Cory neighborhood.
This was truly a neighborhood effort. So many neighbors showed up that the chambers were filled and an overflow room had to be opened.
