San Jose city officials have declined a developer's request to amend zoning for a high-rise housing project near Santana Row, following considerable community opposition. The proposed towers, reaching 17 and 14 stories, would have conflicted with the character of the nearby single-family homes, prompting residents to label the project a "monstrosity." Despite a strong demand for housing, officials noted that the site lacked proximity to transit and the project's scale was unsuitable. Councilmember Michael Mulcahy mentioned the area adds housing but the proposal did not align with city planning goals.
VCI had requested a zoning change to the transit-residential designation to build the height and density it was looking for, but planning staff noted it was out of scale.
District 6 City Councilmember Michael Mulcahy stated, "There's no argument we need more housing at all levels, but unfortunately, this applicant's proposal doesn't fit the intent of the designation they’re pursuing."
