San Jose recently became the first California city to allow the sale of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) as condos, which advocates say increases affordable housing options.
With more than 1,400 new ADUs built since 2019, city leaders aim to alleviate the housing crisis by enabling homeowners to benefit from creating affordable living spaces.
Rafael Perez of Casita Coalition noted that ADU condos typically sell for 40% to 60% of neighborhood house prices, making them a more affordable option.
Todd Langton expressed concern that large corporations might buy up ADUs, similar to single-family homes, leaving them empty to appreciate in value rather than providing housing.
