As South County prepares for the summer harvest, growers are experiencing anxiety over the potential impacts of ICE raids on their immigrant labor workforce. With harvest season approaching, the Santa Clara County Division of Agriculture noted that although they have not yet seen any significant impacts, there are concerns over possible labor shortages and increased costs for harvests. Agricultural advocates stress the reliance of the U.S. economy on immigrant labor, warning that the loss of such workers will have widespread societal consequences.
"The crops are still growing, but we may begin to see labor shortages or a delay on harvests and critical agricultural practices," Roberts told San José Spotlight.
"The United States is dependent on immigrant labor - and when you take away that immigrant labor, it is going to affect every level of society," Darlene Tenes said.
