OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says he is 'envious' of Gen Z college dropouts who have the 'mental space' and time to build new startups | Fortune
""I'm envious of the current generation of 20-year-old dropouts," the OpenAI CEO told Rowan Cheung during an interview at the DevDay conference on Monday."
""Because the amount of stuff you can build... the opportunity space is so incredibly wide.""
""The degree to which OpenAI is, like, taking over all of my mental space, and I don't get to go think about how to build a new startup, is a little bit sad," Altman said."
""But I know that there would be a lot of cool stuff to build," he said."
Sam Altman expressed envy of 20-year-old college dropouts because the opportunity space for building is extremely wide. He said OpenAI consumes most of his mental bandwidth, preventing him from brainstorming new startups and making that situation feel sad. Altman left Stanford at 19 to cofound Loopt, raised over $30 million, participated in Y Combinator, and later cofounded OpenAI in 2015. He stated that many cool things could be built if he had free mental space. He also suggested that early-career jobs will look boring compared with jobs in ten years, and that higher education faces renewed scrutiny.
