The de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University celebrates its 70th anniversary with new leadership under Dr. Ciara Ennis, who previously directed Pitzer College Art Galleries. Ennis aims to invigorate the museum's programming to reflect a 'Museum in Progress' philosophy, inspired by former director Lydia Modi-Vitale. She believes in an academic environment's freedom to undertake innovative, risky exhibitions that explore contemporary research and historical contexts, ultimately bridging gaps between various disciplines and enhancing the museum's experimental legacy.
"I love working in academic environments because you can do really exciting programming and you don't have to worry about making sure your program is acceptable to huge amounts of people. You can be more risky in terms of what you do, it's a space for experimentation."
"There were a number of new initiatives that I started, one being the cycle of contemporary research-based exhibitions, and that really is looking at artists whose exhibitions expand way beyond the art world."
