Campbell volleys back and forth over pickleball permits - San Jose Spotlight
Briefly

The Campbell Planning Commission has directed city staff to consider a conditional use permit for a five-year expansion of a pickleball facility at The HUB Silicon Valley, which would add nine courts to the current 20. However, there are concerns about the validity of imposing the permit, as the property owners might terminate their lease anytime to pursue housing development on the 7.1-acre site. The HUB Silicon Valley operates in a former Fry's Electronics location and currently hosts badminton and pickleball courts. Commissioner Adam Buchbinder expressed discomfort with pressuring the business to close based on speculative housing plans.
"This feels really awkward and uncomfortable," Commissioner Adam Buchbinder said at the meeting. "To the extent to which we can... arbitrarily try and shut down the business because we hope that housing will become feasible in five years and we'll try and push them to shut down then - I'm just not comfortable with doing that."
The proposed expansion would add nine courts to the existing 20 in former warehouse space at The HUB Silicon Valley, which currently operates as a sports facility.
