In 2023, Ashi Dissanayake and Reza Fetanat founded Spacium to revolutionize in-space fueling, starting from a cramped Ottawa apartment. After a successful $6.3M seed funding round led by Initialized Capital and support from Y Combinator, they prepare for a demo mission. The cofounders identified a key industry challenge: spacecraft becoming debris post-mission due to lack of refueling options. Their vision includes creating a network of refueling stations in space, enabling longer missions, essential for future space exploration, including potential colonization of Mars.
The biggest bottleneck in the industry was the lack of refueling options in space, which results in spacecraft becoming space debris after missions.
Our big mission would be to build the space super highway, where we have multiple refueling stations for spacecraft to dock, refill, and continue their journey.
