The recent crash involving an American Airlines flight and a U.S. Army helicopter near Washington, D.C., resulted in 67 fatalities. As recovery efforts proceed, the FAA's investigation into the accident is of utmost importance; however, the agency is currently without an administrator after Michael Whitaker's departure. His leadership faced controversies, including public criticism from Elon Musk about the FAA's regulations. The lack of leadership at the FAA raises concerns about the agency's ability to effectively manage safety investigations and reforms post-accident.
There’s one problem though. While that office may be ready to go to work, the FAA itself is not fully on the job. That's because it's without an administrator.
Michael Whitaker, who had led the administration since Oct. 2023, stepped down earlier this month, announcing in a Dec. 12 email to his staff that he would be leaving the post effective Jan. 20.
