T-Mobile is set to let customers sign up for a beta program to test its upcoming Starlink satellite direct-cell service, which aims to cover vast dead zones in the U.S. Through a new registration page, customers can register for free. This testing phase will begin early next year, and while the service promises extensive coverage, currently it will allow only satellite texting for the beta testers, leaving voice calls and data functionalities to be introduced later.
The FCC recently approved T-Mobile and SpaceX to offer satellite-to-cell services, although limitations remain regarding real-time voice and video calls due to restrictions on radio emission power. This makes it clear that T-Mobile is still in the initial phases of its plans to revolutionize connectivity through satellite technology, as they navigate the regulatory landscape—and this also comes amid concerns raised by Verizon and AT&T regarding potential interferences with their satellite services.
