Longshot Space proposes a kinetic launch system that accelerates payloads to hypersonic speeds, aiming to drastically reduce costs to orbit to as low as $10 per kilogram.
The initial prototype in Oakland achieved speeds of 4.6 Mach, but moving to a larger facility in Nevada will allow for necessary safety and design improvements.
The shift to Tonopah, Nevada, offers a safer environment to demonstrate Longshot's launch capabilities, especially targeting clients like the U.S. Department of Defense.
'We decided to just declare victory and withdraw at Mach 4.6,' said CEO Mike Grace, emphasizing the importance of safety in testing with combustible materials.
