A group of climate and labor activists in Berkeley are pushing for Measure GG, a tax on natural gas, aimed at cutting building emissions significantly.
Severin Borenstein, energy professor, noted that Berkeley residents currently pay $2.33 per therm of gas, with the proposed tax raising that to $5.29.
Andrew Campbell from UC Berkeley highlighted that while the idea of a tax encourages behavioral changes without mandating actions, the proposed tax rate is extremely high.
The measure is seen as necessary by activists to aggressively tackle the climate crisis after a federal ruling had previously hindered local emission regulations.
