San Jose is set to allow the sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks in designated outdoor zones during major upcoming sports events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and Super Bowl 60. A unanimous city council vote has approved six specific locations within the downtown area. This initiative aims to enhance the cityâs ability to attract sports fans and create engaging public experiences. City officials believe that the pilot program will serve as a learning opportunity before considering expanding the zones to other areas.
"We're piloting and focusing on downtown to learn, and then we'll be able to expand it out to other areas," Mayor Matt Mahan told San José Spotlight.
"This flexible approach enhances the city's ability to support major events, enliven commercial districts and create memorable public experiences that strengthen San Jose's position as a vibrant destination," Assistant City Manager Lee Wilcox said.
