In the production of The Fellowship of the Ring, sound designer David Farmer drew inspiration from an unexpected source: the vocalizations of northern elephant seal pups at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, California. During a sightseeing trip with his wife, Farmer captured these intriguing sounds that matched perfectly with the character of the Moria orcs. The distinctive high-pitched tones, which deviated from traditional animal sound sourcing, impressed director Peter Jackson and were ultimately immortalized in the film's iconic scenes. This blending of nature's sounds into cinematic storytelling showcases innovative sound design.
I had never heard that sound before... Oh my god, that is it. That is just exactly what I want.
The noises were a little freaky... It was sort of small and thin, which was also what I was looking for.
