The big news came Monday morning: AA Richmond RHP Hayden Birdsong (No. 9 CPL) has been promoted to AAA Sacramento. That is tremendously exciting, and puts the 2022 6th-round pick on the doorstep of an MLB debut. With LHP Kyle Harrison (No. 1 CPL) and RHP Keaton Winn (No. 6 CPL) having officially graduated, the organization's top 4 pitching prospects - Birdsong, RHP Mason Black (No. 10 CPL), LHP Reggie Crawford (No. 8 CPL), and LHP Carson Whisenhunt (No. 4 CPL) - are all in AAA.
Birdsong was not the only promotion on Monday though - or even the only big-name promotion. AA Richmond center fielder Grant McCray (No. 12 CPL) was also promoted to AAA Sacramento. McCray's promotion after just 2 months in Richmond is exciting, though I'll confess to being a bit perplexed by it as well.
