The Red Sox have acquired catcher/outfielder Blake Sabol from the Giants, sending international bonus pool space back and designating Chase Shugart for assignment.
Sabol's 2023 batting line of .235/.301/.394 reflects struggles with a 34% strikeout rate, following a promising performance in the minors the previous year.
After a tough 2024 season in Triple-A where he slashed .246/.340/.388, Sabol's position was jeopardized by a front office regime change in San Francisco.
Although Sabol has experience behind the plate and in the outfield, he hasn't proven to be a plus defender, with minor league options still available.
