A persistent problem feels like it could cost the Washington Commanders this season. The team has not made any visible progress on fixing its kicking issues since June, when it released Brandon McManus following a lawsuit that accused him of sexual assault.
In the last couple of years, the league has declared its "close-game era," with historic competitive balance, making the need to find a stable kicker even more important. Since 2022, nearly 20 percent of games have been decided with points in the final minute of regulation or overtime.
We've got work to do," Coach Dan Quinn said about the kicking game. "We've got practice next week. We'll see where it takes us. But I was pleased to see Riley come back. He had an early miss. I said, 'Man, we'll get a lot more chances to go for it.'
So, even though the Commanders are long shots for the playoffs this year, better kicking would help in the win column, which would make a difference to the players and executives and staffers trying to accelerate the rebuild.
