Sip, return, repeat': US city tackles throwaway cup culture with first-of-its-kind system
Briefly

Petaluma's new reusable cup initiative, launched this August, has customers returning purple cups to designated bins, battling the staggering 50 billion single-use cups discarded annually.
“We’ve handed out only reusables since the project started, except to the occasional out-of-towner who asks for a paper cup. It’s been a really nice and easy adjustment for us,” Gearhard said.
The outside logistics company takes care of washing the reusable cups, allowing businesses to seamlessly adopt the program without worrying about clean-up.
The initiative has garnered support from 30 local businesses with QR codes for tracking usage, showcasing a community-driven approach to sustainability.
