A dump truck collided with an elevated freeway sign early Wednesday, leading to a closure of northbound I-680 and significant traffic delays during the morning commute.
Traffic on northbound Interstate 680 near the I-580 interchange came to a standstill after a dump truck's rear end clipped an overpass sign, causing a major disruption.
The California Highway Patrol closed all northbound lanes and diverted traffic after concerns that the damaged sign might fall into the lanes below, causing safety issues.
Following repairs by Caltrans workers, traffic finally began moving again at about 11:10 a.m., after more than seven hours of congestion and detours.
