Bay Area businesses are putting up 'Restricted area. Employees only.' signs to protect undocumented workers from immigration enforcement. These signs signify areas where customers are not allowed, as immigration agents can only operate in public areas without a warrant. Laura Valdez from Mission Action emphasizes that any arrest made beyond these signs without a warrant could be deemed unlawful. While these 'know your rights' programs assist undocumented individuals, officials like Trump’s border czar Tom Homan criticize them for complicating enforcement efforts.
"If they go beyond that point and arrest someone, that is considered an unlawful arrest if they did not have a warrant," said Valdez.
"We're urging folks to print a sign that says 'staff only beyond this point..." said Laura Valdez.
"You can call it 'know your rights' all you want. We all know the bottom line...." said Homan.
