Artist Windy Chien reimagines hitching posts through her Hitching Post series, exploring the themes of utility and community. These installations, commissioned since 2019, intertwine elements of her design, showcasing flowing geometric forms made from wood and rope. Each piece serves as a metaphor for interdependence, where the integrity of the knot reflects the connections in social settings. Chien's recent work includes a monumental installation in a Los Angeles office, highlighting her unique artistic approach. Additionally, she will be featured in Ruth Asawa's retrospective at San Francisco MOMA soon.
"If the object around which the hitch is tied were to be removed, the hitch collapses and loses its integrity. Just as the presence of the knot relies on another element to remain intact, social spaces and gatherings rely on collective presence."
