In San Francisco, the annual pillow fight at the Embarcadero has become a beloved and playful alternative to traditional Valentine's Day celebrations. Drawing participants of all ages, this event encourages playful interaction and community bonding, allowing people to let loose and have fun, regardless of age or background. While attendance has decreased over the years, the spirit of inclusion and joy remains strong. Attendees participate in warm-up exercises, and the cheerful chaos culminates in a friendly, energetic pillow battle full of laughter and camaraderie.
Dressed in a unicorn onesie, Allie McAndrews and her friends led the crowd in a pillow fight warm-up session. We stretched, waved pillows over our heads, and exchanged practice hits amid much giggling.
As the clock tower struck 6 p.m., the pillow warriors - and a solitary Spiderman - raised their pillows and let out a battle cry. Feathers would choke the air and clog the drains by now, but this year they remained in their pillows.
