New night market draws thousands to SF highway
Briefly

When you open a newspaper, you know what to expect: news, sports, politics, culture, food. The unwritten idea is that these sections, taken together, present a 360-degree view of local life. But what about the intangible moments that don't slot neatly into any section? For every mayoral poll and 49ers game, a thousand little slices of life don't make the headlines. At SFGATE, we think they're worth celebrating.
Nestled among the dunes of Ocean Beach, the event boasted two stages, one with a DJ and the other featuring local bands. To me, it was the perfect reminder of the markets in Taiwan that have inspired San Francisco to start hosting its own twists on the night market. The instantly eye-catching mollusk was full of flavor, spiced with a hearty sprinkling of five spice and chili. If there was a highlight, it was the fried squid on a stick from United Dumplings.
To try to capture the pulse of the Bay Area, we started Fogcutter, a weekly column where SFGATE's eyes and ears break down the moments from the past week that remind us why we love it here.
