The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department confirmed that the human remains found under the home of Michael Royce Sparks belonged to missing couple, Stephanie and Daniel Menard, indicating a tragic end to the couple’s disappearance.
Redlands Police Chief Rachel Tolber explained that Sparks was identified as a suspect when a family member reported he confessed to killing two people and had threatened suicide. This critical information led the police to his home.
Authorities reported that Sparks had barricaded himself in a makeshift bunker armed with a rifle, prompting a tactical police response involving drones and a battering ram to gain access and effectuate his arrest.
The couple, Stephanie and Daniel Menard, were reported missing after they failed to attend church, with their vehicle later found unlocked near their home, raising concerns for their safety.
