Early Wednesday morning, a section of the Carola Bridge in Dresden collapsed, impacting both car and ship traffic on the Elbe River. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
The Carola Bridge, originally completed in 1895 and rebuilt after World War II, faced significant reconstruction between 1967 and 1971 and recent renovations from 2019 to 2021.
City officials have halted all traffic on the Elbe River due to the collapse, which could lead to significant congestion and detours in Dresden's city center.
The collapse has also affected nearby streets, with reports indicating that substantial water is being pumped into the roadways following the bursting of local water pipes.
