Fremont police chief announces retirement after 28 years

Washington, who started his career in 1998, ascended through the ranks from sergeant to chief in 2021. City Manager Karena Shackelford praised his compassionate leadership and efforts in building trust with the community, reflecting on his significant contributions before the backdrop of a controversial lawsuit involving the department's dynamics.
Serving this community and the Fremont Police Department for over 28 years including nearly four years as chief has been an extraordinary honor and privilege, Washington said.
His focus on compassion and fairness has fostered trust between law enforcement and our community while upholding the dignity of every person, Shackelford said.
