San Francisco Fire Department crews received a call just before 1 p.m. about a blaze in a two-story building at 159 West Portal Ave. that has four businesses inside.
Baxter said the damage in the five businesses is "moderate" and 40 firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze by 2:04 p.m.
A single-story business at 163 West Portal Ave. was also damaged. The address is the location of George's Donuts & Merriment, a highly anticipated doughnut shop expected to open this summer.
The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.
