Kirk Thomas-Olsen, a 61-year-old experienced hiker and former park ranger, went missing in Yosemite National Park during a solo hike, leading to a 20-day search.
His niece, Holly Leeson, expressed gratitude for the efforts made by Yosemite National Park in the search for her uncle, despite the unfortunate outcome.
Thomas-Olsen left a note on his vehicle indicating his return date, but it was this note that alerted park rangers he was missing.
The trail he followed had an 11.4-mile loop, taking an estimated 8 to 10 hours to complete, highlighting the challenges even for seasoned hikers.
