Bay Area power players turn out for San Francisco's biggest fundraising nights
"September is peak gala season in San Francisco, with the city's most venerable cultural institutions pulling out all the stops for some of their biggest fundraising nights of the year. The San Francisco Symphony's season opener on Sept. 12 drew an eclectic mix of tech titans, political heavyweights and the biggest names in philanthropy to Davies Symphony Hall, where virtuoso pianist Yuja Wang dazzled the crowd with a performance of Tchaikovsky's "Piano Concerto No. 1.""
"The drama extended beyond the walls of the concert hall at the San Francisco Symphony, too. Just days before the grand event, symphony musicians were set to stage a strike "amid a bitter dispute over pay, artistic direction and the financial health" of the 114-year-old institution, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Thankfully, a tentative three-year contract was announced on Sept. 12, hours before the gala kicked off."
San Francisco hosted high-profile fundraising galas in September that attracted cultural elites, tech leaders and major philanthropists. The San Francisco Symphony opened its season Sept. 12 with Yuja Wang performing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 for a star-studded audience. The San Francisco Opera held its 103rd-season Opera Ball on Sept. 5 at City Hall with a palazzo theme honoring Verdi's Rigoletto and show-stopping gowns. Symphony musicians threatened to strike over pay, artistic direction and financial concerns, but a tentative three-year contract was announced hours before the symphony gala. Prominent attendees included Dagmar Dolby, Diane "Dede" Wilsey and Sam Altman.
