Bay Area State Senators Scott Wiener and Jesse Arreguin are proposing a ballot measure for a sales tax to support BART and Muni services facing financial struggles exacerbated by the pandemic. With ridership low and operating costs rising, they aim to secure funding to prevent future service reductions. Local leaders emphasize that sustainable public transit is essential for the region's recovery and economic vitality, asserting that without action, significant service cuts could occur, affecting essential travel for residents across counties.
"We need to shore up and save public transportation in the Bay Area," said State Senator Scott Wiener.
"The impact it have on so many people in the region to get to work, get to school, see a doctor," said State Senator Jesse Arreguin.
"If we do nothing, we will see massive service cuts at our public transit agencies, it would be horrific for the Bay Area," said Wiener.
"We know the reality is, San Francisco won't recover unless we have strong reliable public transit in the city," said Alicia Jean-Baptiste.
