A 430-pound male black bear was killed on a Northern California road after being struck by a truck. The incident occurred in the early morning darkness, and while the bear was initially alive post-impact, it succumbed shortly after. Wildlife officials from California Department of Fish and Wildlife collected the bearâs body for necropsy and research purposes. Officials noted that although bear sightings in the region are rare, their habitat is expanding, urging drivers to be vigilant for wildlife, particularly during spring, dawn, and dusk when animals are most active.
"Black bears in California are expanding their range, including into areas north of San Francisco Bay... We ask drivers to watch out for wildlife, particularly in the spring and at dawn and dusk when wildlife often are most active."
"The bear had been walking in the road in the 'early morning darkness' when the driver hit it, the Press Democrat reported."
"The wildlife agency will use tooth and genetic samples to add to the department's database and a necropsy is planned," spokesperson Krysten Kellum said.
"Male black bears usually weigh 150 to 400 pounds, with some males weighing upwards of 500 pounds," the CDFW says.
