We don’t need a safe injection site for drug users; we need a safe place away from drugs for them. In June 2016, my brother died of a drug overdose in a city government initiative that placed him (a known drug user) in a hotel notorious for drug deals happening at the doorstep. Will the Department of Public Health also ignore its safe injection site policy? My guess is: yes!
Safe drug consumption sites are illegal and ineffective. If we don’t provide treatment for drug users, they will die.
We need effective street outreach, more treatment and mental health beds, willingness for mandatory treatment, and providing housing choices for recovery. (71% of SRO residents want drug-free housing, but city and state policies leave them no choice and no way out.)
