Somboun Sayasane, a 75-year-old Laotian-born artist, was reported missing from his South Sacramento home on December 28, shortly after last being seen on Christmas Day. His body, discovered four months later in Placerville, led to the arrest of his 32-year-old roommate, Benjamin Dougherty, who has been charged with first-degree murder. Dougherty's 74-year-old father is also implicated as an accessory.
