"Average roommate rents in New York City are currently the most expensive in the U.S. and, despite showing signs of easing, are still becoming increasingly difficult to afford," says Matt Hutchinson, spokesperson for SpareRoom.com.
"If you don't want to break the bank, it's best to stay away from the little island known as Manhattan, especially downtown."
As of Q3 2024, the average roommate rent in New York City is $1,540 per month, which offers significant savings compared to solo rents.
The three most expensive neighborhoods to share an apartment in New York City are the East Village, SoHo, and the West Village, with room rents averaging $2,374, $2,571, and $2,923 respectively.
