"The safest cities in America protect residents from these threats of bodily harm and property damage, but on top of that, they also help secure people's financial safety," says WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. "Financial safety includes things like minimizing the risk of fraud and identity theft, keeping the population employed and insured, and combating homelessness."
WalletHub ranked the 182 safest cities using metrics that go beyond the usual factors of low crime and low auto fatalities. The study cited 41 key dimensions in three categories: home and community safety, natural disaster risk, and financial safety.
With natural disaster risk included, it comes as no surprise that the list is dominated by Northeastern cities, which are less prone to extreme weather events like hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires.
Coming out on top is South Burlington, VT. It ranks first in financial safety, sixth in natural disaster risk, and ninth in home and community safety.
