State Supreme Court races can be costly, competitive and combative. Why?
Briefly

Wisconsin's Supreme Court election is garnering significant national attention akin to the previous election cycle, with contenders liberal Susan Crawford and conservative Brad Schimel. The race is drawing millions in spending from both national parties and high-profile donors like Elon Musk. Advertising campaigns emphasize candidates' extreme positions and perceived weaknesses. This uptick in financial involvement in judicial elections is becoming commonplace, with similar trends observed in states like Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Political scientists note a notable shift from previously uncontested, low-key judicial races to highly competitive and costly ones.
But while Wisconsin's court race may end up being the priciest court race in history, these high stakes and high expenses are increasingly the norm.
For so long, judicial elections were calm, quiet, and non-contested often literally non-contested, said Damon Cann, a political scientist at Utah State University.
