South Santa Clara County residents concerned as fire response agencies being switched
Briefly

A shift in emergency response in South Santa Clara County was announced during a town hall meeting, where officials discussed the transition from Cal Fire to the Santa Clara County Fire Department. County executive James Williams noted the fiscal instability of the current South County District, which has three fire stations but lacks the necessary revenue. The change aims to provide stable fire protection, though concerns were raised regarding the potential displacement of over 30 firefighters and maintaining adequate fire coverage in rural areas during this transition.
The union representing South County's Cal Fire workers said the vote to end the contract with them means more than 30 firefighters may be displaced.
County executive James Williams stated, 'Currently, the South County District is structurally, fiscally imbalanced meaning that its ongoing revenue is not enough to keep those stations open.'
