In response to the persistent issues of illegal street vending in San Francisco, state Senator Scott Wiener has proposed a new state-level bill exclusively aimed at the city. This legislative effort, backed by Mayor Lurie and several supervisors, seeks to empower police with greater authority to handle illegal vendors. These vendors have been linked to increased chaos in high-traffic areas, significantly affecting the local community and businesses. The SAFE Streets Act represents a more targeted approach, simple in both name and intent, aiming to address the complex challenges faced by the city.
"Criminal organizations are fueling retail theft and bringing violence and chaos to our streets, displacing legitimate street vendors, harming local businesses, and undermining public safety," Wiener said.
"The SAFE Streets Act holds these disruptors accountable and allows our communities to flourish," Wiener emphasized, introducing the new legislation.
Despite various efforts to regulate street vending, San Francisco continues to struggle with illegal vending amid the city’s broader challenges with homelessness and drug use.
The proposed SAFE Streets Act, introduced by Senator Wiener, aims to give police additional powers to tackle illegal street vending in San Francisco.
